The main operating systems that we use in the administration of virtual servers are Ubuntu, Debian, Windows, CentOS, Kali, Astra-Orel.
CentOS — (Community ENTerprise Operating System – the operating system of the Enterprise community) is built on the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). RHEL is a commercial product, but its source code is publicly available and used by CentOS developers. This OS is developing and updating very quickly, but at the same time remains reliable and secure. Many hosting providers and virtual hosting resellers have chosen CentOS.
Debian is also among the most popular operating systems for VPS, because it became one of the first Linux—based operating systems. Debian's reputation has remained high since its release in 1993 – thanks to the security and stability of this OS, created by professional and highly organized developers (the Debian Project community). If you are well-versed in the command line and appreciate the OS's power and security, then you probably prefer Debian.
Ubuntu — (the name translates from Zulu as "humanity") has won the sympathy of many experts because it provides developers and webmasters with a more "friendly" version of Debian. A large number of users and stable development have ensured Ubuntu's reputation as a major player in the Linux computer systems market. This OS is great for supporting remote desktops on a virtual network. It combines qualities such as safety, reliability and ease of use.
Windows is a group of families of commercial proprietary operating systems of Microsoft Corporation, focused on management using a graphical interface. The most common operating system among desktops (with a graphical interface). The system is available for both desktop computers and servers. Currently, the current version is Windows 11 (for desktop computers) and Windows Server 2022 (for servers).
Kali Linux is an operating system designed for users and developers who test various systems and services for vulnerabilities or the possibility of hacking. The distribution package includes hundreds of tools with which you can check the exploitation of known vulnerabilities and test your projects for security.
Astra Linux release "Eagle" is the only Russian OS whose repository is publicly available by the international non—profit organization The Linux Foundation. The repository provides access to 20,000 software packages dl.astralinux.ru and the mirror.yandex.ru/astra and officially recognized as a derivative of Debian GNU/Linux.
